The Greater Demon Lilith arrives on Earth to resurrect her murdered son Jonathan. As Jace is missing certain Shadowhunter protections, she is able to use her magic to control him. The Shadowhunters stop her with help from Asmodeus and Simon's Mark of Cain. They banish Lilith, but Jonathan lives. Clary and him are bound by a rune that inflicts damage of any kind to both people, which means killing Jonathan is not possible until the rune is gone. They remove the rune, but Jonathan is able to open a rift in the universe to let in demons. Magnus closes the rift but Jonathan escapes, and promises that he will be back to destroy the Shadowhunters.
